SIGNIFICANCE OF NAME

SIGNIFICANCE OF NAME

We all form impressions of a person on the basis of their name. The name of an individual exerts an influence upon their name character and potential. The name is selected such that its meaning can inspire the child to follow the path of righteousness. These days’ people are looking to different sources than the traditional naming with the first alphabet by pandits while naming their children like searching on web sites and even consulting books to select a suitable name of a child.

A common practice among Hindus is to name their children after the names of sages, saints, holy persons, deities, and the names of the incarnation of God. It is believed that by repeatedly calling such names one is reminded of the Lord.

Whatever your name, you are likely to be known by several variations, each one representing a different aspect of your nature. We usually concentrate on surnames since hey are the most important way of identifying people who are related. Given names are more important in a way because they represent a voluntary choice by the parents or sometimes by an individual. A name is usually not given lightly but it represents thought and feelings. There is also a custom by the prominent persons to suffix the name of their city like Majrooh Sultanpuri, Mana Ferozepuri, and Parkash Singh Badal.

I do also agree that surnames make funny and find favourable situations as I could not record my statement in the court as PW (Prosecution Witness) in departmental case even on appearing for the 25th time but to my surprise on 26th time, I was given a special treatment by the newly posted judge of my caste name and was issued an attendance certificate with a smiling face.

While posted at Chandigarh, I still remember when it was easy for me to locate one of my friend in AG Office, known with caste name with different alphabet as “C” wala Capoor out of total twenty Kapoors in that office.

Those performing marriage out of their castes should be encouraged to have caste names as suffixes as to let it be known to the rest of the world that caste barriers are breaking.
